5 Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Skin

Are your daily habits damaging your skin? From the foods you eat to the amount you sleep, the things you do every day can help or hinder your skin's health. Here are five common mistakes that are ruining your skin and how to fix them.

Unhealthy Snacking Habits

Sweet treats and salty snacks may tempt your taste buds, but they don't do your skin any favors. Sugar is one of the worst offenders for aging your skin and body. In a process called glycation, sugar-bonded proteins produce free radicals that not only destroy collagen and elastin but also prevent your body from making more. Without these essential proteins, your skin loses its strength and elasticity, and fine lines and wrinkles begin to set in. The sodium found in processed foods is no better: Too much salt can cause your body to retain water and leave skin with a swollen and inflamed appearance (Medical Daily).

You can combat these negative effects by cutting back on your consumption of sugar and processed foods. Instead, satiate your sweet (or salty) tooth by reaching for foods like dark chocolate and walnuts to boost your skin's health. Using skin care products that contain antioxidant-rich ingredients can also help to reduce free radical damage. The Vitamin C in Eminence Organics Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil helps fight the visible signs of aging, smooth wrinkles and protect against further environmental damage.

Skipping Sunscreen

Sun exposure has the potential to deliver a host of skin issues, including melanoma, premature aging and the emergence of dark spots. This year alone, an estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in the United States, with 86% of cases attributed to sun exposure (Skin Cancer Foundation). When it comes to aging, UVA rays are the prime culprit. Eminence Organics President Boldijarre Koronczay says: They destroy collagen, contribute to a lack of elasticity and tone and cause thicker looking skin what I call alligator skin. In addition, spending too much time in the sun without proper protection can contribute to the emergence of dark spots on your skin's surface.
