Dos and don'ts for washing your face

Sure, it sounds simple to cleanse but, as the American Academy Of Dermatology Association says, "how you wash your face can make a difference in your appearance." Here are tips from Eminence Organics Product Support Representative Alicia Hawthorne on how to cleanse your face effectively.

Check your hands

It sounds like a no-brainer, but don't forget to wash your hands before touching your face. Dr. Jeannette Graf, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center tells StyleCaster,  "I'm constantly amazed at how many people skip this step.' After all, according to the University of Colorado, we carry a shocking number of bacteria on our hands: 3200 from 150 different species. Ensuring that you have clean hands (and clean face cloths) is the first step for an effective cleansing process.

Test your water temperature

After you're prepped with squeaky clean hands, make sure that you use the right temperature of water. Don't use hot water since "exposing the skin to different extremes can actually cause irritation, excess dryness, break skin tissue and rupture blood vessels." Just like hot showers strip the oily protective layer all over and cause dehydration, using hot water when cleansing the face will dry out the complexion and cause damage. Do use lukewarm water so your skin stays hydrated and unaffected.

Be gentle

Once you've washed your face thoroughly (don't forget the neck!), you're ready to dry off. Alicia reminds us to be gentle with the skin: "Make sure you don't rub your face vigorously when you're drying off." Rubbing can cause irritation and gradually reduce elasticity in your skin. Instead, pat skin dry gently with a clean towel to finish off the cleansing process.

Exfoliate regularly

In addition to washing your face, you'll want to boost your cleansing routine a few times a week by exfoliating. Cast your mind back to the 'caveman regimen' skin care trend, the short-lived fad which involved washing your face like a caveman, i.e., not at all. Dry skin types are also vulnerable to issues, with the complexion becoming drier and duller due to buildup.
